Team Revved Up Raises $8562 at the Sears Great Canadian Run

On September 24, 2011, 17 runners from Orangeville Honda and numberous more volunteers from the dealership took part in the Sears Great Canadian Run.

The SGCR is a non-competitive relay run that stretches from either Vaughn or Bolton to Blue Mountain Village in Collingwood. Orangeville Honda's 'Team Revved Up' chose to go the longer distance, 131 km. The shorter distance was still pretty hefty at 101 km.

Beginning at 6:30 am at Vaughan Grove Sports Park, Team Revved Up began to systematically knock off the relay legs of varying distances until finally reaching Blue Mountain at around 8:30 pm. Mother nature could not have provided a better day for us.

The SGCR is dubbed 'The Relay To End Kids Cancer'. The Orangeville Honda team raised $8562 for the cause which was 305% of our original goal. The generosity of our customers was incredible and we can't thank enough all who contributed.

The top three fund-raising teams were truly amazing:

  1. Journey For Jacob raised $67,347.77

  2. Team ABPA raised $25,066.00

  3. Team Gabriel raised $17,301.41

To truly understand the inspiration of some of these teams, read this article on Team Gabriel.

1 Million Miles On A Honda?!

You might think that a corporation that makes its bread and butter from selling new cars would not encourage its customers to drive their vehicles well beyond that vehicle's life expectancy. You would never see a real estate company celebrating a customer that has remained in the same home for 25 years, would you?

Well, Honda does. American Honda has a website dedicated to 'high-milers'. Because the site is American, the customer stories and achievement levels are in miles. We've included conversion tools below (roughly 1 mile=1.61km).

Click here to go to the website.

There are currently no 'diamond' level high-milers on the site. Diamond level is a Honda that has exceeded 1,000,000 miles (1,600,000 km)! However, there are a few in the Ruby level which is beyond 700,000 miles.

This is a great website, a great idea and a tribute to the reliability of Honda vehicles.

At Orangeville Honda, we fairly consistently see vehicles come into the Service Department with 200,000 to 500,000 km on the odometer.

Is your Honda a 'high-miler'? Tell your story in the comments below - we'd love to hear it...

Stay tuned: We will be doing fundraising at Orangeville Honda in the time leading up to the Run.

Just a Few FAQ's About the Orangeville Honda Parts Department

In our on-going efforts to provide a great experience for our customers, here is a list of a few of the top questions we're often asked.

Do I need to come and pay for special order parts in advance?

No. When you need to order a Honda OEM part from us, just call us at 1-888-201-0410 (ask for parts) and you won't need to pay a dime until you come and pick up your order.

How long does it take for a part ordered from Honda Canada to arrive at Orangeville Honda?

Our ordering deadline is 3:30 every afternoon. If your parts order gets to us before that time and Honda Canada has the part in stock at one of the three warehouses across Canada, your order will be at Orangeville Honda by (at the latest) 12 noon the next day. Most often, when parts are coming from Honda Canada's Markham warehouse, we get our parts order for 8:00am.

What are the hours of operation for the Orangeville Honda Parts Department?

We are open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00am until 5:00pm. Thursday is our extended day, 8:00am until 8:00pm. Saturday we are open from 8:00am until 1:00pm. We are not open on Sundays. If you absolutely need a part but can't get to OH by 5:00pm, just let us know and we'll make arrangements to leave your order with the sales department who are open later.

Do you charge customers for plastic shopping bags?

Absolutely not! We think it's hypocritical to charge for packaging for the sake of the environment when the companies that do charge this fee have no problem dumping half a tree's worth of paper in your mailbox each week.

Do you do home delivery?

Not yet. This is a service that we are considering, so keep tuned!

I have an Acura. Can you get OEM parts for me?

Although Honda dealerships are theoretically not able to order parts for Acura automobiles, much of the parts cross over from one brand to another. So... the answer is a 'most likely yes'. At worst, we can have your parts ordered in from one of our friends at Acura - this usually takes an extra day but will not cost you any kind of surcharge.

New Honda Vehicles You Probably Haven't Seen

We're all familiar with Honda's vehicle names (Civic, Accord, Odyssey, Pilot, etc...) in North America because unlike the domestics, Honda doesn't confuse the customer with new names each year for the same old model.

Throughout the world, Civic's and Accord's are pretty standard names for Honda vehicles. However, different countries can bring different versions of Honda automobiles that those of us in North America are just not familiar with. Here's a little pictorial journey around the Honda World.

From the top:

1. Honda Brio from India - a super sub-compact!
2. Honda Stepwagon from Japan - I believe they call it a 'people-mover'.
3. Honda Legend from Australia - It's like the old Acura Legend never died...
4. Honda Civic 5-door from England - Why is this model not in Canada?
5. Honda Tourer from England - A cross between an Accord and Odyssey but not a Crosstour.

They Still Love Us!

It seems Honda's are still the car thief's choice of automobiles. The stats from the article below are from 2009. Honda/Acura is responsible for five of the ten most stolen cars. Why? Because everyone wants one!

Canada's most frequently stolen cars
- Drew Berner

First, the good news: car thefts in Canada are on the decline. But the bad news is StatsCan latest numbers show over 108,000 vehicles were stolen in 2009 - obviously still a lot of cars.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) published its list of the top 10 most frequently stolen vehicles, a list that includes an equal number of older import brands and luxury SUVs. Often those vehicles, particularly high-value cars like the Hummer H2 and the Cadillac Escalade, are exported out of the country, which in years past would have meant they were gone forever. But the federal government's passage of Bill S-9 - a law that gives the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) increased authority to seize stolen cars meant for export - has helped stem the flow of contraband cars out of the country, particularly at ports in Montreal and Halifax. In fact, IBC reports it recovered $30.7 million dollars worth of vehicles, including the seizure of 600 automobiles meant for export.

Professional thieves likely target specific vehicles, and they aren't all newer models - if you think no one would want to steal your 11-year old Honda Civic, think again. Here are the top 10 most stolen vehicles in Canada:

1. 2000 Honda Civic SiR 2-door

2. 1999 Honda Civic SiR 2-door

3. 2002 Cadillac Escalade 4-door 4WD

4. 2004 Cadillac Escalade 4-door 4WD

5. 2005 Acura RSX Type S 2-door

6. 1997 Acura Integra 2-door

7. 2000 Audi S4 Quattro 4-door AWD

8. 2003 Hummer H2 4-door AWD

9. 2006 Acura RSX Type S 2-door

10. 2004 Hummer H2 4-door AWD

Bill S-9 is a step forward, but as long as people are careless with their vehicles, car thefts will continue to be a problem. According to the IBC, about 20 per cent of stolen vehicles had the keys in them - practically an invitation to even the most amateur thief. Anti-theft devices like alarms, GPS trackers and engine immobilizers are always recommended as a way to prevent theft, but a few simple steps can greatly reduce the chance that your car will be stolen.

- Make sure your windows are rolled all the way up, your doors are locked and you're carrying the key

- Keep your vehicle registration and insurance certificate with you, don't leave it in the car

- Keep valuables out of view - if you have to keep them in the car, lock them in the trunk

- Never leave your car unattended while it's running - you don't want to leave your car warming up in the winter and find it's gone when you return

- Try to park in busier, well-lit areas and close to other cars

- Park in a garage at home if you can, and make sure both the car doors and the garage door are locked

CARSTAR Soaps it Up for Charity this Weekend© CollisionWeek. All rights reserved. 20106660 No part of this publication may be reproduced or transmitted by any means without permission in writing from the publisher.

On Saturday, June 11, CARSTAR Collision Centres in Canada and the United States will aim to break the Guinness World Record for the World's largest car wash by washing more than 4,100 cars in eight hours at multiple venues. The North America-wide world record attempt will see more than 120 events taking place to break the current record set by CARSTAR in 2009.

In Canada, volunteers and staff from CARSTAR locations will roll up their sleeves and break out the buckets and sponges for the eighth annual Soaps It Up for Cystic Fibrosis National Car Wash Event. The funds raised at the car wash will support Cystic Fibrosis Canada and local charities.

After eight years of success in Canada, this marks the third consecutive year that CARSTAR U.S. will be taking part in Soaps It Up. Funds raised from the American car wash events will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

"After setting the world record in 2009, we are thrilled to once again be partnering with our U.S. counterparts in this cross-border initiative to break the record for the World's largest car wash", said Sam Mercanti, President and CEO of CARSTAR Automotive Canada Inc. "Together, through events like Soaps It Up, we are able to reinforce our commitment to supporting charities and local communities across North America where we do business."

"The passion, enthusiasm and commitment of CARSTAR's nationwide network of franchise partners, and customers and support of local communities across Canada have made Soaps It Up our largest and most successful annual fundraising event for eight years running," said Mercanti. "We're hoping to reach some important milestones in 2011 - we want to break a Guinness World Record and we want to hit the 2 million dollar mark for funds raised for Cystic Fibrosis Canada, so we need Canadians to come out to their local CARSTAR Soaps It Up car wash on June 11 to help us make a big splash."

In the last ten years, more than $1.8 million has been raised by CARSTAR Collision Repair Centres to help find a cure. This year, CARSTAR Canada has set a goal to raise $125,000, putting the total raised during CARSTAR Canada's partnership with Cystic Fibrosis Canada at over $2 million.

On The Lighter Side...

Now for a little car salesman humour. You (shouldn't) run into any of these indicators at Orangeville Honda!

Top 10 Indications You Have the Wrong Used Car Salesman

10. When you complain that a car has too many miles, he asks you how many miles you'd like to see on it.

9. Has dog named "Chevette."

8. When you crank the car and fluid shoots over your left shoulder, he notes, "Oh, that's a standard feature on all of these newer models."

7. Uses the 'Slim Jim' strapped to his belt to open the cars for your inspection.

6. When you ask him where the restroom is, he says, "Tell 'ya what I'm gonna do ...."

5. Lunges behind a fern every time you mention "Mike Wallace."

4. His bumper sticker reads, "Honk If You've Ever Reamed A Guy For Eight C-notes On A '72 Dodge Dart."

3. Casts no shadow even in direct sunlight.

2. Ever uses the words "excellent" and "Hyundai" in the same sentence.

1. Tries to convince you that this car will get better mileage because it is heavier, and you will be able to "coast a lot."

My apologies to the great people at Hyundai for #2...

2011 Honda Odyssey Achieves Historic Safety Milestone

From Honda Canada:

Odyssey becomes the only minivan to earn top U.S. safety ratings from both IIHS and NHTSA under more-stringent testing guidelines

The short version of this story: the all-new 2011 Honda Odyssey is really, really safe!

MARKHAM, ON (March 22, 2010) – The 2011 Honda Odyssey minivan achieved a
historic safety milestone, becoming the first and only minivan to earn the highest
possible U.S. safety ratings from both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)
and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under their
respective more-stringent testing guidelines. No other minivan this year has received
both a 2011 TOP SAFETY PICK award from IIHS and an "Overall Vehicle Score1" of
five stars from NHTSA.

The Odyssey was recently named a 2011 TOP SAFETY PICK from IIHS, the U.S.-based
institute's highest honour. The award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of
protecting vehicle occupants involved in front, side and rear crashes, plus rollover
performance based on ratings in IIHS tests, as well as having a standard electronic
stability control system. The Odyssey earned the highest-possible score of GOOD in all
four ratings, including the more rigorous roof-strength test.

In addition to earning the TOP SAFETY PICK designation, the Odyssey was one of the
first vehicles to achieve NHTSA's best-possible "Overall Vehicle Score" of five stars. The
newly introduced Overall Vehicle Score is part of the U.S. government's New Car
Assessment Program (NCAP) that is first being applied to 2011 models. The Odyssey
achieved its top "Overall Vehicle Score" with five-star ratings for the frontal crash safety
test and both side crash safety tests2 in all evaluated front and rear seating positions and
scenarios. The Odyssey also received four stars for the rollover rating3.

All 2011 Odyssey vehicles utilize the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™)
body structure. ACE is an exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and
crash compatibility in frontal crashes. The ACE design utilizes a network of connected
structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the
vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces
transferred to the passenger compartment. Standard safety equipment includes Vehicle
Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control; an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS);
three-row side curtain airbags with rollover sensor; dual-stage, multiple-threshold front
airbags; a driver's front side airbag; and a front passenger's side airbag with an occupant
position detection system.

Overall, the Odyssey improves for the 2011 model year with greater interior
functionality, a more distinctive style and higher fuel economy. Significant
enhancements to the interior include a new 3-mode second-row seat design that is more
comfortable for centre passengers (Odyssey EX and above). A more powerful and efficient
3.5-litre i-VTEC V-6 engine features Variable Cylinder Management (standard on all
models for 2011) and produces 248 hp while delivering a city/highway/combined fuel
economy of 11.7/7.2/9.7 on the LX, EX and EX-L models and 10.9/7.1/9.2 mpg on
Odyssey Touring models.

New technology available on certain models includes a rear entertainment system with a
16.2-inch ultrawide split-screen display and an auxiliary High-Definition Multimedia
Interface (HDMI) video input, an "intelligent" Multi-Information Display (i-MID) with
customizable wallpaper and much more.

The 2011 Odyssey is truly a North American-made vehicle – designed, engineered and
assembled in the U.S. The Odyssey is produced exclusively at Honda Manufacturing of
Alabama using domestic and globally sourced parts.

Of course - you can test drive the all-new 2011 Honda Odyssey at Orangeville Honda!

Honda CRV Tops In SUV Sales

Are you loving your Honda CRV? Yes? You're not alone. For the month of February, 2011, the Honda CRV was the top selling SUV in the United States, as it was in January.

The CRV outsold the Ford Escape by over 1000 vehicles. At the same time, last year, the Escape was number one, outselling the CRV by over 3000 vehicles.

19,096 CRVs were driven off the lot in February. That total represents nearly a 3000 vehicle rise of the previous month - a sign that the battered U.S. auto market is turning around - and that people are smart enough to buy a quality product!

Kudos to our friends at Ford, though. Of the top ten SUVs sold in February, three were Fords. The Escape, of course, was in second. The Ford Edge came in sixth and the Ford Explorer came in seventh.

For a great source of monthly auto sales stats, check out Good Car Bad Car - our source for this post.

Limited Edition Honda Accord HFP Coupe

What follows is the press release from Honda Canada:

MARKHAM, ON (February 17, 2011) – Honda Canada revealed the first member of its new
Honda Factory Performance (HFP) line-up at the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show in
Toronto. The Canadian-exclusive, “Limited-Series Black” 2011 Honda Accord HFP Coupe is an
aggressive expression of Honda’s commitment to developing new levels of styling and performance potential of its vehicles.

“The new Accord HFP Coupe is designed for the Accord buyer who wants an even sportier look

delivered,” said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc. “We wanted to
provide an example of how easy it is to create a more sporty ride when your foundation is a Honda – and we’re confident that we have hit the mark with this car.”

The enhanced exterior styling comes from a wider and lower appearance, achieved through a 25- mm (1”) suspension drop, 19-inch wheels and skirt kit that includes front, rear and side skirts. In addition, a more responsive sport suspension designed to provide a more exhilarating driving experience with improved tire grip from special Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires. Add that to the Accord’s 271-horsepower V6 engine and the result is a car meant to turn heads just long enough to see the new 2011 Honda Accord HFP Coupe go from the rear-view mirror to the horizon ahead.

The 2011 Limited-Series Black Honda Accord HFP Coupe will be priced at $37,890 and will be
available at select Honda dealerships this spring in limited numbers, with only 200 being produced.

Time To Update Your Navigation DVD?

Your Honda factory installed navigation unit says you’re at a dead end but the road clearly extends beyond the horizon? It might be time to order an updated navigation DVD!

Unfortunately, due to licensing, the navigation disk cannot be ordered through your Honda dealer’s parts or service department. However, the process is fairly easy through the Honda.ca website.

The easy way is to simply click on this link to order your navigation DVD update. From this site you simply need to click on your vehicle, give your address information and pay via credit card.

The longer route is to go to the Honda.ca website and follow these steps:

1. Click on the Honda logo at the top left of the upper navigation bar.

2. At the bottom of the page you will find a series of columns containing links to various pages at the website. Go over to the column with the heading ‘Owners’.

3. Click on ‘Genuine Parts & Service’ under ‘Owners’.

4. On the left of this page there will be a vertical navigation bar. Mouseover ‘Genuine Parts and Service’. Select ‘Navigation’ from the list of options.

5. From this page, click the ‘Order Navigation DVD’ button and you will find yourself at the ordering site.

Although we can’t order the disk for you, we at Orangeville Honda, are more than happy to help you with any questions you have in the ordering process or the subsequent installation process once you have your updated DVD. If you do not have access to the internet, drop in and we’ll run you through it on one of our computers.

Don't Make A $140 Mistake! Get Your Wiper Inserts Changed at the Dealership

We have it instilled in our minds by constant media suggestion to buy the simple ‘do-it-yourself’ items for your vehicle at the Canadian Tires or Walmarts of the world. Windshield wiper blades are definitely one of these items. Even the car owner with the least mechanical ability can change his or her own wiper blades.

Vehicle quality is constantly being improved each and every year and with that, the vehicles are becoming more and more complicated. Yes, even the simple wiper blade has evolved into something that is a bit of a technical masterpiece. Your OEM Honda wiper blades are made to provide the best visibility when you need it the most.

Especially since 2008, Honda has changed their wiper blade design drastically. Customers regularly complain that after replacing the original blades with inexpensive aftermarket wipers, they are worse off. At your Ontario Honda Dealer, it is painful for the Parts and Service Departments to have to inform a customer that they need to spend up to $70 per wiper blade because they threw their old ones out and replaced them with a ‘cheaper’ alterative from one of the big box stores.

It is painful because, although we’re all in the business of making money, we don’t like to make it on a customer’s mistake – especially when they’ve maybe been handed some misinformation.

On ALL Honda vehicles with OEM wiper blades, ALL Ontario Honda Dealers, especially Orangeville Honda, will replace the wiper blade inserts for just the cost of the rubber. In other words, after paying for the inserts, installation is free.

How much are these inserts? Typically, after sales tax, you will pay no more than $12.99 total for both blades (approx. $5.50 each)!

Here are some examples of what Honda OEM full replacement wiper blades cost:

2008-2011 Honda Civic Sedan - $70 per side (yes that’s $140 for wipers!).
2008-2011 Honda Civic Coupe - $50 per side.
2009-2011 Honda Fit - $36 per side.
2007-2011 CRV - $40 for the driver’s side and $30 for the passenger’s.
2008-2011 Accord - $40 for the driver’s side and $30 for the passenger’s.

The rubber is not meant to last and can degrade fairly quickly in the extreme Central Ontario weather. If your vision isn’t as clear as it used to be, drop into Orangeville Honda – no appointment necessary – and we’ll gladly change your inserts for you.
